Hi there, young learners! Welcome back to Primary 3 Basic Science and Technology. In our previous lesson, we learned about the identification and description of a floppy disk. Today, we’re going to learn about the different Types of Diskette.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- Identify and describe different types of diskettes.
- Appreciate the evolution and importance of storage devices.
- Differentiate between various sizes of floppy diskettes using visual aids.
Types of Diskette
Floppy diskettes, also known as diskettes, were a common way to store and transfer data before the widespread use of USB drives and cloud storage. They were made of flexible magnetic material encased in a protective cover.
What are the different types of diskettes?
There are different types of diskettes, each with its own size and storage capacity. Some of these types include:
- 8-inch Diskette: This was the first type of floppy diskette. It was quite large and could store around 80KB of data. It was mainly used in the 1970s.
- 5.25-inch Diskette: This diskette is smaller than the 8-inch version and could store more data, usually between 360KB and 1.2MB. It was commonly used in the 1980s.
- 3.5-inch Diskette: This is the most recent and widely recognized floppy disk. It could store up to 1.44MB of data. It has a hard plastic cover which makes it more durable.
Densities of Diskettes
The storage capacity of a floppy diskette is also determined by its density. There are three main densities:
- Single Density (SD): These have the least storage capacity.
- Double Density (DD): These can store twice as much data as single density.
- High Density (HD): These have even greater storage capacity, up to 1.44MB.
Lesson Evaluation
Now that you’ve learned about the different types of diskettes, let’s see if you can answer these questions:
- What are the three main types of floppy diskettes?
- What are the differences between the 5.25-inch and 3.5-inch diskettes?
- What is meant by single density, double density, and high density?
- Which type of diskette do you think is the best and why?
Conclusion
Today, we learned about the different types of diskettes and their storage capacities. Remember, even though floppy disks are not as common as they used to be, they played a significant role in the development of computer technology.
