Hello, young learners! Welcome back to Primary 2 Pre-Vocational Studies, Home Economics theme. In our previous lesson, we learned about Persons To Accept Things From. Today, we’re going to learn about the Care Of Food.

- Define food and explain what food preservation means.
- Appreciate the importance of preserving food.
- Work collaboratively in groups to discuss food preservation methods.
Care Of Food
What is Food?
Food is anything we eat or drink to provide energy and nutrients for our bodies. It helps us grow, stay healthy, and have the energy to play and learn. Some examples of food include fruits, vegetables, grains, meat, and dairy products.
What is Food Preservation?
Food preservation means keeping food in a safe and edible state for a longer time. This means that we make sure the food doesn’t spoil quickly and remains good to eat. There are many reasons why we preserve food, such as:
To prevent food waste: Preserving food helps us avoid throwing away food that has gone bad. To have food available year-round: Preserving food allows us to enjoy certain foods even when they are not in season.
- To make food last longer: Preserving food can help us save money by making our food last longer.
Methods of Preserving Food
There are many different methods of preserving food, and they are:
- Drying: Removing water from food to prevent bacteria from growing. This method is often used for fruits, vegetables, and meat. Examples include dried fruits, jerky, and sun-dried tomatoes.
- Canning: Storing food in airtight containers to keep it fresh. This method is often used for fruits, vegetables, and meats. Examples include canned fruits, vegetables, and soups.
- Freezing: Keeping food at very low temperatures to stop bacteria from growing. This method is often used for fruits, vegetables, meats, and seafood. Examples include frozen fruits, vegetables, and meat.
- Salting: Using salt to draw out moisture from food and kill bacteria. This method is often used for meats and fish. Examples include salted fish and cured meats.
- Pickling: Storing food in vinegar or brine to keep it from spoiling. This method is often used for vegetables. Examples include pickled cucumbers, onions, and carrots.
Lesson Evaluation:
Now that you’ve learned about the care of food, let’s see if you can answer these questions:
- What is food?
- What does food preservation mean?
- List three methods of preserving food.
- Describe one method of food preservation you have seen or used at home.
- Why is it important to preserve food?
