Hello, young learners! Welcome back to Primary 3 Pre-Vocational Studies, Agricultural Science. In our previous lesson, we learned about Water. Today, we’re going to learn about Balance Diet.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
Define a balanced diet. Appreciate the importance of a balanced diet for health. Identify examples of food items for a balanced diet from a chart. Discuss with peers the benefits of eating a balanced diet.
Balance Diet
A balanced diet is a meal that contains the six classes of food in the right proportion and sufficient amount.
Foods considered as balanced diet provide us with the necessary nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that our bodies need to function optimally. For example, a balanced meal might include rice (carbohydrates), beans (proteins), vegetables (vitamins and minerals), and a small amount of oil (fats).
Food Groups
There are six major food groups, and they are:
- Carbohydrates: These provide energy for our bodies. Some examples include rice, bread, potatoes, and pasta.
- Proteins: These help us grow and repair our bodies. Some examples include beans, meat, fish, and eggs.
- Fats: These provide energy and help our bodies absorb vitamins. Some examples include butter, oil, and nuts.
- Vitamins: These help our bodies function properly. Some examples include fruits and vegetables.
- Minerals: These are important for our bones, teeth, and other body functions. Some examples include milk, cheese, and yogurt.
- Water: This is essential for all body functions.
Lesson Evaluation
To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:
- Define what a balanced diet is.
- Name one food from each food group.
- Explain why it is important to eat a balanced diet.
Conclusions or Summary
We learned that a balanced diet is important for our health. It provides our bodies with the nutrients they need to grow and function properly. We also learned about the six major food groups and how to identify foods from each group.
