Hi guys! I am so excited to have you all back in class today. In our previous lesson, we learned about the promise of a saviour. Today, we have a very special topic to explore together: “The Prophecy of the Coming of Our Saviour.” This lesson is very important because it helps us understand how the birth of Jesus Christ was foretold many years before He was born. We will be reading from the book of Isaiah in the Bible, where the prophet Isaiah and many other prophets told us about Jesus Christ’s birth.
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will:
- Understand what a prophecy is.
- Learn about the prophecies given by Isaiah regarding the birth of Jesus.
- Identify the names of Jesus Christ as mentioned by Isaiah.
- Appreciate the significance of these prophecies in our Christian faith.
Understanding Prophecy
A prophecy is a message from God, given through a prophet, about something that will happen in the future. Prophets were special messengers chosen by God to deliver His messages to the people. In our lesson today, we will focus on the prophet Isaiah and his prophecies about the coming of Jesus Christ.
The Prophecy of Isaiah
Isaiah 7:14 – The Sign of Immanuel
Let’s start with Isaiah 7:14, which says,
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:14
This verse tells us that a virgin will have a baby boy, and His name will be Immanuel, which means “God with us.” This prophecy was fulfilled when Mary, a virgin, gave birth to Jesus.
Isaiah 9:6-7 – The Names of Jesus
Next, we have Isaiah 9:6-7, which reads:
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
Isaiah 9:6-7
This prophecy gives us several names for Jesus:
- Wonderful Counselor – Jesus gives us wise guidance.
- Mighty God – Jesus has the power of God.
- Everlasting Father – Jesus cares for us forever.
- Prince of Peace – Jesus brings peace to our hearts.
Isaiah 11:1-5 – The Branch from Jesse
Isaiah 11:1-5 tells us:
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord— and he will delight in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.
Isaiah 11:1-5
This prophecy tells us that Jesus will come from the family line of Jesse, who was King David’s father. It also describes how Jesus will have the Spirit of the Lord and will rule with wisdom, understanding, and justice.
Memory Verse
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6
Importance of These Prophecies
These prophecies are very important to us as Christians because they show that God had a plan for our salvation long before Jesus was born. They also help us to recognize Jesus as the promised Savior, fulfilling the words spoken by the prophets. This strengthens our faith in God’s promises and His love for us.
Fun Fact
Did you know that the name “Immanuel” means “God with us”? This reminds us that Jesus is always with us, guiding and protecting us.
