Hello, everyone! Welcome to our Christian Religious Knowledge class. In our previous lesson, we learned about The promise of the comforter/Holy Spirit. Today, we will learn about a very special topic: The Coming of the Holy Spirit.
Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Narrate how the power of the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples.
- Mention the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Let’s begin our lesson to understand how the Holy Spirit came and how He helps us even today!
The Coming of the Holy Spirit
Before Jesus returned to Heaven, He promised to send a special helper—the Holy Spirit—to His disciples. This promise was fulfilled on a day called Pentecost. The coming of the Holy Spirit is an important event in the Christian faith.
The Story of Pentecost
After Jesus ascended to heaven, the disciples were all together in Jerusalem, waiting as Jesus had instructed them. Suddenly, a sound like a powerful wind filled the house where they were sitting. Then, they saw what looked like flames or tongues of fire that separated and rested on each of them. This amazing event is recorded in Acts 2:1-4.
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Acts 2:1-4
Filled with the Holy Spirit, the disciples began to speak in different languages. People from many nations were in Jerusalem, and they were amazed to hear the disciples speaking in their own languages, telling about the wonders of God.
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit gives believers special gifts to help them serve God, spread the message of Jesus and help others. There are seven main gifts of the Holy Spirit, and they include:
- Wisdom – to make good decisions.
- Understanding – to comprehend God’s message.
- Counsel (Right Judgment) – to know what is right.
- Fortitude (Courage) – to stand up for what is right.
- Knowledge – to understand God’s word.
- Piety (Reverence) – to have a deep respect for God.
- Fear of the Lord (Wonder and Awe) – to be amazed by God’s power and love.
Additional Gifts of the Holy Spirit (as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10):
- Faith – to trust God completely.
- Healing – to make sick people well.
- Miracles – to do amazing things through God’s power.
- Prophecy – to tell what God wants people to know.
- Discernment of spirits – to know what is from God.
- Speaking in different languages (Tongues) – to speak in languages we have not learned.
- Interpretation of languages (Interpretation of Tongues) – to understand and explain these languages.
- Helping – to assist others effectively.
- Administration – to organize and lead well.
These gifts help Christians to live out their faith and to help others know about God’s love and power.
Memory Verse
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
