Hi, young learners! Welcome back to Primary 2 Pre-Vocational Studies. In our previous lesson, we learned about Care Of Food. Today, we’re going to learn about the reasons for food preservation.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- List and explain at least three reasons for food preservation.
- Appreciate the importance of preserving food to avoid wastage.
- Discuss with peers the benefits of food preservation in their families.
Reasons For Food Preservation
What is food preservation? Food preservation is the process of treating food to stop or slow down spoilage and make it last longer. There are several reasons why we preserve food. Some of these reasons include:
- Prevent Spoilage: Food spoils because of bacteria and other microorganisms. These microorganisms grow and multiply in food, causing it to rot, mold, or become unsafe to eat. Preservation methods, like refrigeration, canning, drying, and pickling, stop or slow down the growth of these microorganisms, preventing spoilage.
- Extend Shelf Life: Preserved foods last longer. This means we can keep food for weeks, months, or even years without it going bad. This is especially helpful for fruits and vegetables that have a short shelf life.
- Maintain Nutritional Value: Preservation helps keep the vitamins and nutrients in food. For example, frozen vegetables keep most of their vitamins, while canned fruits retain their sweetness and color. This ensures that we get the necessary nutrients from our food even when it is not fresh.
- Ensure Food Availability: By preserving food, we can have access to it even when it is not in season. For instance, we can eat mangoes all year round if they are preserved. This helps us enjoy a variety of foods throughout the year.
- Save Money: Buying food in bulk and preserving it can be cheaper than buying small amounts often. This helps save money and reduce trips to the market. For example, buying a large bag of beans and drying them can be more cost-effective than buying small bags of dried beans regularly.
Lesson Evaluation:
Now that you’ve learned about the reasons for food preservation, let’s see if you can answer these questions:
- List two reasons for preserving food.
- Explain how preservation prevents food spoilage.
- Describe one way to store food in a refrigerator.
- Discuss why food preservation is important for your family.
Conclusions or Summary
We have learned that food preservation is important for preventing spoilage, extending shelf life, maintaining nutritional value, ensuring food availability, and saving money. By understanding the reasons for food preservation, we can make informed decisions about how to store and manage our food.
