Forms of Energy
Energy is the ability to do work. There are many different forms of energy, and we’ll be focusing on two of them today: mechanical energy and electrical energy.
What is Mechanical Energy?
Mechanical energy is the energy that an object possesses due to its motion or position. This means that any moving object or any object that can be moved has mechanical energy.
Some examples of mechanical energy include:
- A bicycle moving downhill: The bicycle has kinetic energy (energy of motion) as it moves down the hill.
- A windmill: The wind turns the blades of the windmill, which in turn generates mechanical energy.
- A ball thrown in the air: The ball has potential energy (energy of position) when it’s at its highest point and kinetic energy as it falls back down.
What is Electrical Energy?
Electrical energy is the energy that is created by the flow of electrons through a conductor, such as wires. It’s used to operate everything from lights and appliances to computers and televisions.
Some examples of electrical energy include:
- A light bulb lighting up when switched on: The flow of electrons through the wires in the light bulb causes it to glow.
- An electric oven heating food: The flow of electrons through the heating elements in the oven generates heat.
- A computer running: The flow of electrons through the circuits in the computer allows it to process information.
