Hello, Welcome back to Primary 3 & 4 Basic Science & Technology. In our previous lesson, we learned about the Meaning and examples of technology. Today, we’re going to learn about Forms of Technology: developed and underdeveloped technology.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- List 4 examples of both developed and underdeveloped technology.
- Identify examples or products of underdeveloped and developed technology.
- mention 3 classes of technology
- Classify products into their respective form of technology.
Forms of Technology
There are many different forms of technology, and they are constantly evolving but they can be classified into two main groups, namely: Developed Technology and Underdeveloped Technology.
What is Underdeveloped Technology?
Underdeveloped technology refers to simple tools or machines made with basic materials and methods. These technologies are often found in traditional societies and are usually less complex than developed technologies. Some examples or products of underdeveloped technology includes Wooden Plow, Hand Fan, Oil Lamp, etc [view more examples of underdeveloped technology]
What is Developed Technology?
Developed Technology are advanced tools, machines, and systems that have been created to solve problems and make tasks easier. These technologies are usually more complex and efficient than underdeveloped technologies. Some examples or products of developed technology includes cars, airplanes, robots, etc. [view more examples of developed technology]
Classes of technology
While we can broadly group technology into Developed and Underdeveloped based on how advanced or basic it is, technology can further be classified based on it’s general application, or area it is used. This is because different types of technology serve various purposes and areas of life. The key classes of the forms of technology are:
- Communication Technology: This includes devices and systems that help us communicate with each other, such as telephones, computers, and the internet.
- Transportation Technology: This includes vehicles and systems that help us move from one place to another, such as cars, trains, and airplanes.
- Medical Technology: This includes devices and systems that help us diagnose and treat illnesses, such as X-ray machines, microscopes, and medical software.
- Educational Technology: This includes tools and resources that help us learn and teach, such as computers, tablets, and online learning platforms.
- Agricultural Technology: This includes tools and techniques that help us grow food and raise livestock, such as tractors, fertilizers, and genetically modified crops.
- Entertainment Technology: This includes devices and systems that help us enjoy ourselves, such as televisions, video games, and music players.
- Construction Technology: This includes tools and techniques that help us build structures, such as cranes, bulldozers, and concrete mixers.
- Energy Technology: This includes devices and systems that help us generate and use energy, such as solar panels, wind turbines, and power plants.
- Environmental Technology: This includes tools and techniques that help us protect and improve the environment, such as recycling systems, pollution control devices, and renewable energy sources.
Evaluation Questions
Now that you’ve learned about forms of technology, let’s see if you can answer these questions:
- Name 4 examples of underdeveloped technology?
- Name 4 examples of developed technology?
- What is the difference between underdeveloped and developed technology?
- Can you think of any other examples of underdeveloped and developed technology?
- How has technology changed our lives?
Conclusion
We’ve learned about the two main forms of technology: underdeveloped and developed technology. Remember, technology is constantly evolving, and new forms are being developed all the time.
