Hi, students! Welcome back to Primary 4 Basic Science and Technology. In our previous lesson, we learned about Changes In Animals. Today, we’re going to learn about changes in non-living things.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to: * Explain how non-living things change from one form to another.
Changes in Non-Living Things
Changes in non-living things refer to the processes or alterations that occur in materials or objects that are not alive. These changes can happen due to various factors such as heat, moisture, time, or chemical reactions.
Ways Non Living Things Change
There are several ways non-living things change, and some of them include:
Melting
Melting is a change in which a solid material turns into a liquid when heated. For example, when you heat ice, it melts into water.
Rusting
Rusting is a type of change that occurs in metals, particularly iron, when they come in contact with moisture and oxygen from the air. Rust is a reddish-brown substance that forms on the surface of iron, making it weak and brittle.
Moulding
Moulding involves changing the shape of a material without changing its state. For instance, you can mould clay into different shapes using your hands.
Burning
Burning is a rapid chemical change that occurs when a substance combines with oxygen, typically accompanied by the release of heat and light. Wood, paper, and candles are examples of materials that can burn.
Evaluation Questions
Now that you’ve learned about changes in non-living things, let’s see if you can answer these questions:
- What is melting, and can you give an example?
- Explain rusting and its significance.
- Describe what happens when something burns.
- Why is it important to understand how non-living things change?
- Can you think of any other ways non-living things change?
- How do these changes affect our daily lives?
Conclusion
We’ve learned that non-living things can change in various ways, such as melting, rusting, moulding, and burning. These changes are important to understand because they affect our daily lives in many ways. Keep exploring and learning about the world around you! See you in the next lesson!
