Hello, young learners! Welcome back to Basic 2 Basic Science. In our previous lesson, we learned about The Sense Of Sight – Eye. Today, we’re going to learn about the sense of hearing and how our ears help us hear sounds.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- Identify the sense organ responsible for hearing.
- Describe the three main parts of the ear: outer, middle, and inner ear.
- Explain the function of each part of the ear in simple terms.
The Sense of Hearing – Ear
The ear is the part of our body that helps us hear different sounds. It’s like a special receiver that picks up sound waves and sends them to our brain.
What is the Ear?
The ear is a complex organ with three main parts:
- Outer Ear: This is the part of the ear that you can see. It’s shaped like a funnel and helps collect sound waves. The outer ear includes the earlobe, the ear canal, and the eardrum.
- Middle Ear: This is a small, air-filled space behind the eardrum. It contains three tiny bones called ossicles: the malleus, incus, and stapes. These bones vibrate when sound waves hit the eardrum, amplifying the sound.
- Inner Ear: This is the innermost part of the ear and contains the cochlea, a spiral-shaped structure filled with fluid. The cochlea converts sound vibrations into electrical signals that are sent to the brain through the auditory nerve.
How does the Ear Work?
When sound waves travel through the air, they reach the outer ear and are funneled into the ear canal. The sound waves then vibrate the eardrum, which in turn causes the ossicles in the middle ear to vibrate. These vibrations are then passed on to the cochlea in the inner ear, where they are converted into electrical signals that travel to the brain. The brain then interprets these signals as sound.
Evaluation Questions
Now that you’ve learned about the sense of hearing and the ear, let’s see if you can answer these questions:
- Which part of the body helps us hear sounds?
- What are the three main parts of the ear?
- What is the function of the outer ear?
- What are the three tiny bones in the middle ear called?
- What is the role of the cochlea in the inner ear?
Conclusion
Today, we learned about the sense of hearing and how our ears work. We discovered that the ear has three main parts: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. Each part plays a vital role in helping us hear sounds. Remember, our ears are amazing organs that allow us to experience the world around us.
