- Identify and list two causes of illness.
- Explain two prevention methods for illness.
- Appreciate the importance of personal hygiene in preventing illness.
Illness – Causes and Prevention
Illness is a state of being unwell or unhealthy. It can be caused by various factors, and it’s important to understand these causes to prevent them.
What is Illness?
Illness is a condition that affects our bodies and makes us feel unwell. It can be caused by many things, such as germs, unhealthy habits, or even accidents.
Causes of Illness
Some of the major causes of illness include:
- Poor Hygiene: This includes not washing your hands regularly, not bathing often, and not keeping your surroundings clean. Germs can easily spread through dirty hands and environments.
- Contaminated Water: Drinking water that is not clean and safe can make you sick. This can happen if the water is contaminated with bacteria or viruses.
- Inadequate Nutrition: Not eating healthy foods can weaken your body and make you more likely to get sick. This is because your body needs the right nutrients to fight off germs.
- Airborne Pathogens: These are tiny germs that can travel through the air and cause illness. They can be spread through coughing, sneezing, or even talking.
- Close Contact with Sick Individuals: If you are close to someone who is sick, you are more likely to get sick too. This is because germs can easily spread from person to person.
Prevention of Illness
There are many things you can do to prevent illness. Some of these include:
- Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom, before eating, and after playing outside. Take a bath or shower regularly.
- Safe Drinking Water: Drink clean and safe water. You can boil water for a few minutes to kill germs, or you can use a water filter.
- Balanced Nutrition: Eat a variety of healthy foods, including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
- Proper Ventilation: Make sure your home and classroom have good ventilation. This means that fresh air can circulate easily.
- Social Distancing and Hygienic Practices: Stay away from people who are sick. If you have to be around someone who is sick, try to keep a safe distance. Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
Evaluation Questions

- What are two ways to prevent illness?
- Why is it important to wash your hands often?
- What are some healthy foods that can help you stay healthy?
