Hello, young learners! Welcome back to Primary 1 National Value Education. In our previous lesson, we learned about the importance of hygiene. Today, we’re going to learn about contaminated foods.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- List ways how foods get contaminated.
- Develop an attitude of caution and proactive measures towards food contamination.
- Work together to identify potentially contaminated foods in various scenarios.
Contaminated Foods
What is food contamination?
Food contamination happens when harmful substances or organisms, like bacteria or viruses, get into our food. This makes the food unsafe to eat and can make us sick.
Causes of Food Contamination
There are many ways food can get contaminated. Some of these include:
- Dirty hands: If we don’t wash our hands properly after using the bathroom or touching something dirty, we can transfer germs to our food.
- Unwashed fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables can carry dirt, bacteria, and pesticides from the farm or the market.
- Improper storage of food: Keeping food at the wrong temperature or in unclean containers can allow bacteria to grow.
- Contaminated water: Using water that is not clean to wash food or drink can lead to contamination.
- Infected animals and pests: Animals and insects can carry germs that can contaminate food.
Ways of preventing food contamination
We can prevent food contamination by following these simple steps:
- Washing hands: Always wash your hands with soap and water before handling food.
- Washing fruits and vegetables: Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating them.
- Keeping cooked and raw foods separate: Keep cooked food away from raw food to prevent cross-contamination.
- Storing foods at the correct temperature: Store food in the refrigerator or freezer at the right temperature to slow down the growth of bacteria.
- Cooking foods thoroughly: Cook meat, poultry, and fish to the correct internal temperature to kill any harmful bacteria.
Evaluation Questions:
Now that you’ve learned about contaminated foods, let’s see if you can answer these questions:
- What is food contamination?
- Name two ways food can get contaminated.
- How can we prevent food from getting contaminated?
- Why is it important to wash our hands before handling food? 5. What are some things we can do to keep our food safe?
Conclusions or Summary
We learned that food contamination can make us sick, but we can prevent it by following simple steps like washing our hands, washing fruits and vegetables, and storing food properly. Remember to always be careful about the food you eat and ask your parents or teachers for help if you have any questions.
