Hello, young learners! Welcome back to Primary 1 Basic Science and Technology. In our previous lesson, we learned about Water. Today, we’re going to learn about Air.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- Define Air
- Identify air as a component of our surroundings.
- Demonstrate the existence of air.
Air
What is Air?
Air is an invisible mixture of gases that surrounds us. It exists everywhere, and we need air to breathe. Air is an important component of our surroundings!
The Existence of Air
There are many ways to demonstrate the existence of air, even though we can’t see it. One way is to use a glass and a basin of water.
- Experiment: Place an empty glass upside down in a basin of water. Observe what happens. The water doesn’t enter the glass because the air inside the glass pushes against the water. This shows that air takes up space and has pressure.
Air as a Component of Our Surroundings
Air is all around us, and it plays a vital role in our lives. Some of the ways we use air include:
- Breathing: We breathe in air to get oxygen, which our bodies need to survive.
- Wind: Wind is moving air, and it can be used to power windmills and sailboats.
- Flying: Airplanes and hot air balloons use air to fly.
- Sound: Air carries sound waves, allowing us to hear.
Evaluation Questions
Now that you’ve learned about air, let’s see if you can answer these questions:
- What is air?
- Give an example of how we use air.
- How can we demonstrate the existence of air?
- What are some other components of our surroundings besides air?
- Why is air important to us?
Conclusion
We learned that air is an invisible mixture of gases that surrounds us and is essential for life. We also learned how to demonstrate the existence of air through simple experiments. Don’t forget to check the comments section if you have any questions, and use the navigation to move to the next lesson. See you in the next lesson!
