Hello, young learners! Welcome back to Primary 2 Agricultural Science. In our previous lesson, we learned about the Uses Of Food Crops. Today, we’re going to learn about Useful Farm Insects.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- Identify and list examples of useful farm insects.
- Show appreciation for the roles of insects in agriculture.
- Discuss in groups the benefits of farm insects and share findings with the class.
Useful Farm Insects
Useful farm insects are those insects that help in pollination, decomposing waste, and controlling pests. Some of these insects include:
- Ladybugs: They eat aphids and other harmful pests that can damage crops.
- Bees: They are vital for pollination, which is the process of transferring pollen from one flower to another, allowing plants to produce fruits and seeds. Without bees, many of our favorite fruits and vegetables wouldn’t exist!
- Earthworms: They are like tiny farmers in the soil! They create tunnels that allow air and water to reach plant roots, making the soil healthier and more fertile. They also break down dead leaves and other organic matter, turning it into nutrient-rich compost.
- Praying Mantises: These insects are skilled hunters and can catch and eat a variety of pest insects, helping to keep them under control.
- Lacewings: Their larvae are voracious eaters of aphids and other small insects, making them valuable allies in the fight against pests.
These insects are beneficial to farms because they help in maintaining the health of crops and reducing the need for chemical pesticides, which can harm the environment and our health.
Lesson Evaluation
Now that you’ve learned about Useful Farm Insects, let’s see if you can answer these questions:
- Name three useful farm insects discussed today.
- What is the role of bees on a farm?
- Why are earthworms important for soil?
- Can you think of any other insects that might be helpful on a farm?
- How do useful insects help us?
Conclusions or Summary
We learned about the importance of useful farm insects and how they contribute to a healthy and productive farm. Remember, insects are not all bad! Many of them play crucial roles in our ecosystem.
