Hello, young learners! Welcome back to Primary 1 Basic Science Technology. In our previous lesson, we learned about Meaning & Forms of Energy. Today, we’re going to learn about Things That Use Energy.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- Identify and list 3 things that use energy.
- Show appreciation for the importance of conserving energy in daily life.
- Discuss in groups the importance of energy and share ideas on how to conserve energy.
Things That Use Energy
Energy is the ability to do work and it is all around us and powers many things we use every day.
Identifying Energy-Using Activities
Some of the activities that show the use of energy include:
- Running: When you run, your body uses energy to move your legs and feet.
- Jumping: Jumping requires energy to lift your body off the ground.
- Walking: Walking uses energy to move your legs and feet forward.
- Writing: Writing requires energy to move your hand and pen across the paper.
- Playing: Playing games like tag or hide-and-seek uses energy to move around and have fun.
Identifying Objects Using Energy
There are many objects that use energy to work. Some of these objects include:
- Light Bulbs: These convert electrical energy into light.
- Televisions: These use electricity to display images and sound.
- Refrigerators: These use electricity to keep food cold.
- Air Conditioners: These use electricity to cool a room.
- Computers: These use electricity to process information and run programs.
- Electric Cars: These use electricity to power their motors.
- Washing Machines: These use electricity to wash clothes.
- Microwave Ovens: These use electricity to heat food.
- Cell Phones: These use electricity to make calls, send messages, and access the internet.
- Video Game Consoles: These use electricity to run games and provide entertainment.
Performing Energy-Using Activities
When we perform any of the activities mentioned above or use any of the gadgets, we use energy which is why we feel tired, need to recharge our batteries or buy more cooking gas, petrol or fuel for our appliances. Let’s try some activities that show the use of energy:
- Jump up and down a few times.
- Clap your hands together.
- Write your name on a piece of paper.
Questions for Evaluation:
Now that you’ve learned about things that use energy, let’s see if you can answer these questions:
- Can you list three devices you use at home that consume energy?
- Why is it important to save energy?
- Give one example of how you can save energy at home or in school.
- What are some other things that use energy?
- How can we conserve energy in our daily lives?
Note to Teachers:
Encourage pupils to think critically about energy usage and conservation. Use real-life examples to make the lesson relatable and engaging. Adjust the content and activities based on the resources available and the unique dynamics of your classroom.
Conclusion or Summary
We learned that many things we use every day require energy to work. It is important to conserve energy because it is a valuable resource. Remember to turn off lights when you leave a room, unplug devices when not in use, and use energy-efficient appliances.
