Hello and welcome back to Primary 1 Basic Science and Technology. In our previous lesson, we learned about Meaning and Types of Games. Today, we’re going to learn about Local Games and safety rules.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- Mention some local games.
- Demonstrate local games.
- Mention safety rules of local games.
Local Games
Local games are traditional games played in a community or region. They are usually passed down through generations. In Nigeria, these games have simple rules and are enjoyed by everyone. Some examples of some popular local games includes:
- Ayo: Ayo is a strategy game played with seeds or small stones placed in wooden pits on a board. Players move the seeds around to capture as many as possible from the opponent.
- Ludo: This board game involves moving pieces around the board based on dice rolls. The goal is to move all of your pieces to the center while avoiding being sent back to the starting point by other players.
- Suwe (Hopscotch): Suwe is a hopping game where players draw boxes on the ground with chalk or sand. Players toss a stone into a box and hop through the boxes on one leg, avoiding the box with the stone.
- Tinko Tinko (Tug of War): Two teams pull on opposite ends of a rope. The goal is to pull the other team across a marked line.
- Ten-Ten: Ten-Ten is a rhythm-based game where two players face each other, clap their hands, and alternately move their legs in rhythm. The aim is for each player to avoid matching the other’s leg movement.
- Boju Boju (Hide and Seek): In Boju Boju, one player covers their eyes and counts while others hide. The player then seeks to find the hidden players before they return to the base.
- Who Is in the Garden?: A circle game where one person stands in the middle while others form a circle around them. The group sings and asks the person in the center a question, and they must answer or act out the response.
- Whot: A card game played with a special set of cards, where players match symbols and numbers. The aim is to get rid of all your cards first.
- Rat and Rabbit: In this chasing game, players form a circle, and two people are chosen to be the “rat” and the “rabbit.” The rabbit tries to escape the circle while the rat tries to catch it.
- Cat and Rat: Similar to “Rat and Rabbit,” one person is the “cat” and the other the “rat.” The cat chases the rat, and the players forming a circle can help the rat escape by opening and closing the circle.
- Fire on the Mountain: In this game, players form a circle and chant while one person walks around the outside. When the chant ends, the person in the center must find a spot in the circle to join, leaving one person out.
- Number-Number: Players are divided into two teams on opposite sides with each player assigned a number. When a number is called, the corresponding players must race to grab a flag placed in the middle and return safely to their base without being tagged.
Safety Rules in Local Games
Safety is important when playing to avoid injuries. Some safety rules to keep in mind when playing local games includes:
- Play in a Safe Area: Ensure the playing area is free of sharp objects, traffic, or obstacles that could cause injury.
- Avoid Rough Play: Be careful when playing physical games like Tug of War or Suwe to avoid pushing, pulling too hard, or any action that could harm others.
- Respect the Rules of the Game: Always play by the rules to ensure fairness and avoid arguments or accidents.
- Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Always look around to ensure that you are not in danger of falling or bumping into others while playing.
- Wear Suitable Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for running, jumping, and other physical activities to avoid tripping or getting hurt.
- Respect Your Playmates: Play gently, especially in games like Ayo or Ten-Ten, where close contact may happen. Respect others and avoid any form of aggression.
By following these rules, we can enjoy our local games while staying safe.
