Hello, young learners! Welcome back to Primary 4 Basic Science Technology. In our previous lesson, we learned about Human Body – The Mouth II. Today, we’re going to learn about the Human Body, specifically focusing on the mouth and its role in feeding.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- Describe the functions of the tongue and lips in feeding.
- Appreciate the role of mouth parts in healthy eating.
- Participate in discussions on the importance of mouth parts in communication and social interactions.
The Roles of the Tongue and Lip in Feeding
The mouth is an important part of our body that helps us eat and speak. It contains several parts, but today we’ll focus on the tongue and lips.
What is the Tongue?
The tongue is a muscular organ located inside the mouth. It’s covered in tiny bumps called taste buds, which help us taste different flavors.
Roles of the Tongue in Feeding
The tongue has several important roles in feeding:
- Tasting Food: The tongue contains taste buds that help in detecting sweet, sour, salty, and bitter flavors. This allows us to enjoy the different tastes of food.
- Manipulating Food: It helps in moving food around the mouth for effective chewing. This ensures that food is properly broken down before swallowing.
- Forming Bolus: The tongue shapes chewed food into a bolus (a small rounded mass of chewed food) before swallowing. This makes it easier for the food to travel down the esophagus.
- Swallowing: It plays a crucial role in the process of swallowing by pushing the bolus towards the back of the mouth and into the esophagus. This ensures that food reaches our stomach safely.
What are the Lips?
The lips are the fleshy parts that surround the mouth. They are very sensitive and help us to feel the temperature of food.
Roles of the Lips in Feeding
The lips also have several important roles in feeding:
- Holding Food: Lips help to keep food inside the mouth while eating. This prevents food from falling out and helps us eat neatly.
- Sensing Temperature: Lips are sensitive to temperature, which helps in gauging the temperature of food before it enters the mouth. This helps us avoid burning our mouths on hot food.
- Aiding Sucking: In the case of liquids, the lips enable sucking by creating a seal around a straw or the opening of a cup. This allows us to drink liquids easily.
- Speech: While not directly involved in the process of feeding, the lips play a vital role in articulating sounds during speech, which is often associated with eating situations and social interactions around food. This allows us to communicate clearly while eating.
Evaluation
Now that you’ve learned about the roles of the tongue and lips in feeding, let’s see if you can answer these questions:
- What are the roles of the tongue in feeding?
- How do the lips assist in the feeding process?
- Why is it important to take care of our mouth?
Conclusion
Today, we learned about the important roles of the tongue and lips in feeding. Remember, taking care of our mouth is essential for healthy eating and speaking.
